When determining the size of the apron, you must adhere to the following rules:
- the extreme points of the apron in height should overlap the lower and upper cabinets by 20-30 mm,
- the overall height of the apron is from 450 to 600 mm (depending on the height of the people who will cook in the kitchen),
- the width of the apron must necessarily overlap the working areas at the stove and sink. It looks beautiful when the protection covers the entire line of the headset,
- when installing an apron over a gas stove, it is necessary to take into account the minimum distance from the surface of the stove to the hood (750-800 mm),
- if there are no upper cabinets, the wall protection should be brought up to the ceiling.
The color scheme of the apron should be in harmony with the overall decoration of the room and the color of the headset. Designer's advice comes down to the following recommendations:
- universal colors for the kitchen space are: white, beige and cream,
- it’s undesirable to use shades of blue and violet,
- bright red and orange inserts will contribute to arousal of appetite,
- if the kitchen has a white set, it is better to make an apron out of dark or colored materials,
- gray design is recommended to be diluted with bright colored mosaic,
- dark-colored wooden furniture is diluted with light tones,
- in kitchen sets made of MDF for natural wood, aprons will also look good, also imitating wood, but by a tone or two lighter,
- for spaces that are poorly provided with natural light, you need to select light, bright colors.
What is an apron, and why is it needed?
Apron - the distance from the countertop to the upper headset. It is named after the usual piece of clothing that protects the hostess from dirt. Immediately it protects the wall from dirt, spray, grease. Attempts to do without an apron will not lead to anything good:
p, blockquote 2.0,0,0,0 ->
- the wallpaper will get dirty, get wet, go bubble, and eventually peel off,
- whitewash or plaster will simply peel off, and the paint will be erased due to constant washing of the surface.
The apron is located throughout the working area in the kitchen, so it is always in front of the eyes while cooking - which means it should be attractive. That's why so much attention is paid to this issue - it is necessary to choose a durable beautiful option that is suitable for a specific design.

Ceramic tile
The traditional version of the kitchen apron in our country. Now, in construction stores, tiles are available for every taste, color, size and wallet, so choosing a design option that suits your design will not be difficult.
p, blockquote 5,0,0,0,0 ->
At the moment, tile-boar is relevant, in shape resembling a reduced brick. Or a small square tile with hand-painted ornaments. Here lies one of the main disadvantages of the tiled apron - the seams.
p, blockquote 6.0,0,0,0,0 ->
p, blockquote 7,0,0,0,0 ->
Water, dirt, and grease fall into the seams, which serve as a wonderful home for bacteria - not the best neighborhood with the place where the food is prepared. Even if the seams are often cleaned, sooner or later they will stop looking presentable and will have to work grouting again.
p, blockquote 8,0,0,0,0 ->
The next minus is the preparation of the walls for the tiles - they must be perfectly even. So even that you have to invite a professional to level the walls, which will cost additional cash. Why is that?
p, blockquote 9,0,0,0,0 ->
p, blockquote 10,0,0,0,0 ->
In the kitchen, the seams are filled with a special grout, the seam of which should not be more than 1.5 mm (for comparison, in the bathroom, the inter-tile seam can reach 4 mm). If the wall is uneven, it is very difficult to lay the tile, given that even within the same batch it can differ by a couple of millimeters in size.
p, blockquote 11,0,0,0,0 ->
For this reason, self-laying of tiles on the apron is also noted - only a professional should do this. It’s better to invest in a craftsman once than to look at the apron that is not exactly evenly laid for years.
p, blockquote 12,0,0,0,0 ->
p, blockquote 13,0,0,0,0 ->
Both processes - that preparing the wall, that laying the tiles - are very dusty, therefore they are carried out strictly before installing the headset. But at the same time, a kitchen design project with calculated markings up to centimeters should be ready. Ideally, an apron (any, not only tiled) should go a centimeter under the upper and lower cabinets.
p, blockquote 14,0,0,0,0 ->
Tile is a durable material that will last for many years. This will play into the hands, since replacing such an apron is an even more time-consuming process than just installation. In order not to be disappointed in your choice, you should give preference to an ordinary smooth tile without roughness and patterns, otherwise dust and dirt will accumulate in them, which will ruin the whole appearance.
p, blockquote 15,0,0,0,0 ->
p, blockquote 16,0,0,0,0 ->
Mosaic
A subspecies of a tile apron can be considered made of mosaics. It always looks expensive, elegant and beautiful. It is very rare in apartments, and there is a reason: the preparation for the mosaic is even more thorough, and the seams of this option are much larger. As an option - use a mosaic panel - this will facilitate the installation of the apron, but it will not save the number of seams.
p, blockquote 17,0,1,0,0 ->
p, blockquote 18,0,0,0,0 ->
Opposite tiles are MDF panels - medium density fibreboard. This is pressed wood chips, which are covered with plastic wrap on top. This solution is very economical and easy to maintain and install - even an unprepared person can handle it.
p, blockquote 19,0,0,0,0 ->
An additional plus is that the MDF panel has no seams, which means that you do not have to clean them. In addition, under such an apron, it is not necessary to level the walls to perfect condition, which means that you can save on one specialist, at least.
p, blockquote 20,0,0,0,0 ->
If you believe the reviews, the MDF panel will not last as long as the tile - about 5-7 years with good care, but it will not be difficult to replace it. Typically, such an apron is planted on special strips, liquid nails, or simply self-tapping screws, so its replacement will take half an hour from the force - and this is dust free. Due to the film on top, such panels are resistant to damage. They can be washed even with mild abrasive products.
p, blockquote 21,0,0,0,0 ->
p, blockquote 22,0,0,0,0 ->
If you have doubts about design abilities, in order not to lose money, you should choose a panel in the color of the countertop - this option will always look neat and stylish.
p, blockquote 23,0,0,0,0 ->
Perforated panels
These panels are made from both MDF and PFH. They are ordinary boards, but with a large number of holes created for hooks, on which there will be potholders, ladles and other little things needed by the hostess at hand. If necessary, the hooks can be removed at any time, added or simply outweighed.
p, blockquote 24,0,0,0,0 ->
It looks comfortable, but moisture entering through the holes can even cause mold. Or, at a minimum, soften the glue and the walls, and the apron will just walk away.

Glass
Glass is a new solution for decorating an apron, but it is gaining popularity very quickly. Glass gives the kitchen lightness, while it looks stylish and impressive. With it, you can create any design. There are several options:
p, blockquote 27,0,0,0,0 ->
- photo printing on glass - will cost a lot,
- ordinary, murals, maps, atlases, children's drawings under glass - panoramic pictures look especially beautiful,
- fabric or lace - to realize a simple, but very rare,
- drawing on the back of the glass or on the wall itself.
p, blockquote 28,0,0,0,0 ->
Glass gives unlimited scope for imagination: absolutely any ideas can be combined with it - even with coffee beans to lay out the entire wall.
p, blockquote 29,0,0,0,0 ->
Usually they use only tempered glass with a thickness of 6 mm or more, it costs more than tiles and especially MDF. Another disadvantage is that the selected picture can just get bored - but in this case it can be replaced, since the mirror is placed on the frame. It is necessary to think over all the necessary holes in the apron in advance: for sockets or roof rails, since glass can only be drilled from the back.
p, blockquote 30,0,0,0,0 ->
Imprints, drops and dirt are always visible on the glass, so you'll have to wipe the apron often. The plus is that caring for it is very simple - you only need a microfiber cloth. Glass is most often solid, that is, it has no joints - and there is not even a chance that someone will start there. Tempered glass is resistant to damage and temperature changes, so its service life is practically unlimited.
p, blockquote 31,0,0,0,0 ->
p, blockquote 32,0,0,0,0 ->
Mirror
A glass apron may be a mirror. It looks very unusual, perfect for small kitchens that need to at least visually expand the space. It has all the advantages of glass, but you will have to wipe the mirror much more often, since every speck of dust is visible on it - especially if you add the highlight of the working area.

Plastic
The most budgetary and easiest option that can be changed at least every year is plastic. Plastic panels are sold in construction stores for every taste and color, their installation is absolutely elementary: you just need to coat the back side with universal glue or liquid nails.
p, blockquote 35,1,0,0,0 ->
The service life of such a panel is large, but the appearance may deteriorate, for example, the color will fade in the sun. If you do not use abrasive cleaning agents, then scratches should not appear.
p, blockquote 36,0,0,0,0 ->
One minus - not suitable for all stoves. If the stove is gas and without a hood, then there is a risk that the plastic will simply heat up and melt. Yes, and in appearance this option is more suitable for a summer house or a rented apartment: budget and neat.

p, blockquote 38,0,0,0,0 ->
Steel
An unusual option, but also has a right to exist. Fireproof, looks relevant in trendy urban styles like loft, high-tech. Steel can be either polished or patterned. Such material is durable: it will not fade, will not require polishing, it is almost impossible to damage it.
p, blockquote 39,0,0,0,0 ->
An apron made of steel is as hygienic as possible, because microbes and bacteria simply do not have a chance to settle and multiply on its surface.
p, blockquote 40,0,0,0,0 ->
The only negative is that it requires special care, otherwise cracks and scratches may appear from inaccurate handling. Metal - the material is cold, it may seem unfriendly to some.
p, blockquote 41,0,0,0,0 ->
p, blockquote 42,0,0,0,0 ->
Natural or artificial stone
These options are more expensive, but also more solid. Usually they are chosen together with the countertop, so if you have a wooden, glass, steel countertop, you should not look towards the stone apron - you will get a tasteless taste.
p, blockquote 43,0,0,0,0 ->
A stone, even natural or artificial, is a very durable material: it is not afraid of moisture, fire or temperature changes. Some even manage to cut on stone countertops, but only spoil the knives. It requires careful care without the use of acids and abrasive, but traces of drops and fat on such a material will be almost invisible.
p, blockquote 44,0,0,0,0 ->
p, blockquote 45,0,0,0,0 ->
Acrylic
Roughly speaking, acrylic is a plastic that can depict at least marble, even oak. It costs less than stone, but still an expensive option. Acrylic plates are joined almost without seams, therefore hygiene is in order. Acrylic itself is a good material: it does not fade, does not fade, does not stain, and is durable. Like glass, it gives a huge scope for imagination. But, since it is based on polymers, this imposes some of the limitations:
p, blockquote 46,0,0,0,0 ->
- can melt near the stove, as it is afraid of high temperatures,
- does not like aggressive and abrasive detergents.
Acrylic looks beautiful in the kitchen, for example, on the facades, but for an apron this is not the best option.
p, blockquote 47,0,0,0,0 ->
p, blockquote 48,0,0,0,0 ->
Laminate or parquet
Laminate is preferable for use on an apron, and even more often and cheaper parquet comes out. It is worth picking up a high-class material (32-33) and good locks with moisture protection. You will have to lay it yourself, since they do not sell finished panels from laminate under an apron. Mounted on liquid nails.
p, blockquote 50,0,0,0,0 ->
The apron from the parquet is done differently: first the “dies” are attached with glue or liquid nails to the substrate, then everything is varnished and also attached to the wall. But at the stove, the varnish can melt or crack, so this method is not suitable for everyone. You can close the parquet with glass, but then the apron will turn out too thick - this will not suit everyone. But it looks very original.
p, blockquote 51,0,0,0,0 ->
p, blockquote 52,0,0,0,0 ->
Brick
Natural brick or gypsum is absolutely not suitable for an apron due to its porous structure: all liquid and dirt will be absorbed inside like a sponge, and then it will be very difficult to clean it.
p, blockquote 53,0,0,1,0 ->
Glass will again come to the rescue, which will protect this interesting design decision. But this way the texture of the brick is lost, so such a decorative element is better to simply move away from the place of cooking.
p, blockquote 54,0,0,0,0 ->
p, blockquote 55,0,0,0,0 ->
Wine corks
Yes, they do it too - they lay out the apron with wine corks. Moreover, they not only collect them themselves, but also buy them out (!) From bars and restaurants. To make the process go faster, cut them into halves - so it is more convenient to glue them to the substrate.
p, blockquote 56,0,0,0,0 ->
Laying pattern is the same as that of parquet. Only the cork material is porous, so washing them will be a big problem. You can resort to a permanent assistant - glass, but is it worth it to build up an already thick apron? The cork idea is suitable for a dining place, but for a work area in the kitchen.
p, blockquote 57,0,0,0,0 ->
p, blockquote 58,0,0,0,0 ->
Disks and shards of dishes
Here, all the necessary and unnecessary garbage comes into play: broken dishes, whole dishes, CDs - all this sticks to the substrate, and the joints are smeared with grout from the tile. It looks impressive, because the second such apron is simply impossible to meet.
p, blockquote 59,0,0,0,0 ->
p, blockquote 60,0,0,0,0 ->
But here again the problem pops up with seams that will often have to be cleaned. In addition, CD-ROMs have a mirror surface, on which all drops and dust particles will be visible.
p, blockquote 61,0,0,0,0 ->
Pebbles
If you are a lover of pebble beaches, then you can create such a corner in the kitchen. For example, in the form of an apron. But since the surface of the stone is heterogeneous, but it will be very difficult to clean it, dust will fall between the pebbles, and as a result, such a panel will quickly lose its original appearance.

Slate paint
A very original method is to make a slate instead of an apron. All that is required for this is to walk three times with slate paint over the required space. It is easy to care for: avoid abrasive detergents and hard sponges.
p, blockquote 64,0,0,0,0 ->
With the help of the drawings on the board, you can change the look of the kitchen at least every day - this is definitely not boring. It will look especially impressive in a white kitchen.

Oilcloth
Yes, the apron can also be made from oilcloth. One of the most budget options that you can do yourself. All that is required: make the necessary measurements, select the oilcloth itself, and then attach it to the wall using a furniture stapler.
p, blockquote 67,0,0,0,0 ->
This option will save the walls from dirt and water, but for a gas stove it is better to choose another option - the oilcloth may also be charred.
p, blockquote 68,0,0,0,0 ->
p, blockquote 69,0,0,0,0 ->
Choosing which apron is better in a particular situation is not easy. Most often, people focus only on aesthetics, but do not forget some more points:
p, blockquote 70,0,0,0,0 ->
- budget,
- planned duration of use,
- kitchen style
- the complexity of repair and replacement,
- cleaning.
Focus on these factors, and the apron will delight you for many years.
Style
Material and texture should fit the general stylistic decision of the room and furniture. For certain styles and areas of decoration, the following options are recommended for making an apron in the kitchen:
- ceramic tiles from Italy - the ideal solution for spaces in the loft style,
- mosaic tiles or glass will enrich the look of eclecticism,
- for kitsch it is recommended to use mirror tiles,
- Mediterranean color will create panels on ceramics,
- stone (natural or artificial) will organically fit into the solemn Victorian style,
- metal and glass will find their place in high-tech.
Types of materials for the apron in the kitchen
Traditional materials and new products in the construction industry allow homeowners to choose their own custom solution for finishing the kitchen space. To find the optimal solution for specific operating conditions, it is recommended that you first study what manufacturers offer. So, what to make a kitchen apron on the walls?
Natural and artificial stone
Slabs made of natural or artificial stone give the interior status of the kitchen. Typically, porcelain tiles are used for an apron, natural polished plates except marble (marble can accumulate moisture and odors), specially prepared tiles made of concrete or gypsum, large polished pebbles look original on the wall.
Pros:
- immunity to high humidity,
- easy to clean
- long term of operation,
- Attractive appearance
- environmental friendliness.
Minuses:
- high price,
- difficult repair and restoration,
- complexity of installation.
It is recommended to apply design with natural or artificial stone in the interiors of the classical style. The cost is from 2500 to 8500 rubles. per m 2.
Metal
Equipping metal aprons with stainless steel sheets in the kitchen is not the most popular solution, but for rooms designed in hi-tech or techno style, this option is considered the most suitable.
For design, sheets with a smooth and corrugated surface are used, which allows you to choose the best solution for any type of interior.
Pros:
- metal is resistant to high temperatures,
- does not accumulate odors,
- does not absorb fat
- not afraid of moisture
- easy to wash
- high strength.
Minuses:
- it is possible to clean metal sheets from dirt only with liquid products and a soft sponge,
- high price.
Cost from 5500 rub. per m 2.
Due to the wide variety of colors and textures, MDF panels can be selected for any interior and design. Especially good is the material in combination with wood furniture or its imitation.
Given the low cost and ease of installation, MDF panels are often used in country houses.
Pros:
- the material is not afraid of mechanical stress,
- with daily care, the material retains its original appearance for a long time,
- MDF surface is resistant to high humidity,
- fastening the panels is not difficult, and the beginner will also cope with the task.
Technology of installation of an apron.
Minuses:
- when heated, the material emits the evaporation of formaldehyde resins,
- the material is flammable, it cannot be fixed in close proximity to a gas stove,
- water falling onto an unprotected film surface contributes to the swelling of the material and the formation of mold or fungus,
- do not use abrasive products to clean the panels,
- MDF with an acrylic protective film quickly lose their original appearance.
This material is suitable for the equipment of the kitchen area in the country, since it can be purchased quite cheaply. Compared to other materials, this is the most budgetary solution. Cost from 300 rub. per m 2.
Material Comparison

The best option for value for money
The most inexpensive solution for wall decoration will be MDF or plastic panels, which are easy to mount with your own hands. The most expensive option would be to use natural stone or expensive tile with panels.
Glass will cost a lot, while due to photo printing on the wall you can create the most fashionable and unique design of the space.
It is most beneficial to combine different materials to protect individual areas in the room. For example, for the eating area, you can use cheap plastic panels, and for the cooking place, use standard tile or decorative stone.
What can be done instead of an apron
If it is impossible to equip the apron with traditional methods, it is recommended to protect the surface in the following ways:
- Paint the surface with waterproof glossy paint. Pre-align the wall and finish with a suitable primer.
- Stick wallpaper based on materials resistant to moisture (non-woven, vinyl). It should be remembered that the wallpaper can easily ignite if they are located close to the gas stove.
- Plaster. For surface finishing, you should choose mineral or synthetic materials with the addition of pigments that are suitable in color to the kitchen.
- Use special resistant paint for slate boards.
Tile or analogues? In what situation what material to use
+ A rich palette, including stone, wood, tile, with the possibility of ordering fancy patterns, are matte and glossy, textured. Usually laminated panels are ordered as a companion for the laminated countertops - they are made in one color.
+ Budget material, the price is comparable to the cost of inexpensive ceramic tiles.
+ It is very easy to install and disassemble - no need to "spread the dirt." And tired - you can replace it in just an hour. You can glue directly on top of the old tile (if the thickness does not interfere), you will not need to cook the surface in any special way.
– This is sheet material, and the sheet may not be large enough. With the large size of the kitchen, joints will inevitably appear, which (at best) will be decorated with an aluminum profile, as in the photo. Unlike a tile seam, it is obsessively striking and is not always coaxial with the lines of the upper and lower cabinets.
– For corner joints, metal guide angles are used. The end face of the panel is also better to close the metal plate to look neat. Unlike chipboard worktops, the ends of the laminated panel are not covered with an adhesive edge. So, it will be places unprotected from moisture. If you do not process them during installation with sealant, the panel will quickly become unusable.
– Do not install near a gas stove. Only if the stove has a lid (and it is in the raised state that it will protect the wall) - this option is possible. But in kitchens with hobs without a protective cover, it is better to dwell on other materials.
2. Wall panel made of artificial stone
For whom:
- for those who are looking for a variant of a “shortened” apron of an unusual shape, as in the example in the photo,
- for those who need an apron without a “baseboard” (inevitable in the case of wall panels made of chipboard).
Price: from 3000 rub. per meter, depends on the brand and composition of the artificial stone.
+ The panel sticks to the worktop during installation, which eliminates gaps and water. Do not need a baseboard.
+ The apron can be made curly, not brought to the upper cabinets.
+ The wall panel made of artificial stone is glued and polished so that the joints are not visible - for any length of the kitchen.
+ Repairable: the artificial stone is returned to its original form with a simple grinding.
– The material is also produced in bright colors, but it is always monophonic or has stone inclusions of various kinds. The texture can hardly be called "rich."
– Such a panel costs at least twice as much as a laminated wall panel.
3. Flexible veneer (artificial stone in veneer, flexible stone)
For whom: for those who need the texture of natural stone or natural wood at a relatively affordable price.
Price: from 5000 rub. per sq.m.
The flexible stone consists of a sandstone cut of 1–2.5 mm thick, a binder polymer and a textile base. In the photo - veneer spruce based on from Corian.
+ Flexible veneer is almost indistinguishable from the original.
+ Subject to local repair.
+ It is easily mounted without the help of specialists.
– Limited number of shades.
– It requires special care because of its hygroscopicity: treatment with protective impregnations once a year.
4. Skinali: tempered glass wall panel
For whom:
- for those who want to dissolve the kitchen in the living room,
- when there is a task to use wallpaper (covered with glass) instead of an apron,
- for those who are looking for a durable version of the apron without seams, but with a pattern “not speckled” / not under the stone.
In the photo: tempered glass is used to protect the wallpaper that decorated the walls of the kitchen
+ Fast installation option.
+ The ability to make any color and apply any pattern can be made transparent or mirror.
– Due to its limited size, it is best suited for small kitchens.
– It requires a perfectly flat wall surface, since the installation is carried out on special fasteners, and if the wall is uneven, the glass may crack.
– The glossy surface of the glass requires constant care.
5. Boisery:wood wall panel
For whom:
- for those who want to visually extend headsets without upper cabinets,
- for those who need to integrate the kitchen into the surrounding interior,
- for owners of a spacious kitchen in a classic style.
Boiserie is a modular design consisting of narrow panels of different heights mounted in a groove. For installation, external and internal corners, as well as end elements, are used. Boiserie panels are often used in combination with artificial stone, for example, for decorating buffet areas.
+ A beautiful option for the interior, which flows into the residential.
+ Boiserie can be ordered in an unexpected finish - to age, tint, unexpectedly paint.
– Difficult to clean due to grooves.
– Pretty high price.
+ A wide variety of sizes and shapes: from squares and rectangles to circles, pebbles.
+ A variety of materials used: glass, ceramics, stone, metal, wood.
+ It is supplied with sheets of approximately 30x30 cm, which facilitates installation.
+ Ability to use on radius elements.
+ The ability to cut the sheet and use undercuts.
– High grout consumption.
– Some elements can be displaced or detached from the base during installation, which requires painstaking restoration work.
7. Ceramic tile
For whom: for those who choose proven and understandable solutions - most workers can work with tiles, laying an apron will not cause difficulties.
Price: from 1000 rub. per sq. m - consists of the cost of tiles, grouting and laying services.
+ It is rich in patterns, formats, so you can achieve various effects by styling or choosing a bright collection.
+ You can choose both an expensive and a budget version of the tile.
+ Not sheet material. No need to cut and work with large parts.
– It requires attention and accuracy when laying out, skill from the tiler.
– Assumes dirt during repair.
– Overpayment for extra meters is possible when buying tiles in boxes.
In the photo: thanks to the small honeycomb apron with contrasting grout, the small kitchen looks more spacious
What is important when laying an apron of tiles
1. Choose the appropriate format. In a small kitchen, a large format will look inappropriate, as in a spacious kitchen - a small mosaic. The most economical to use is the medium format. If you compare the price of laying, the small format is more expensive. If we talk about the price of the material, then you will overpay for large-format tiles with a higher probability: more tiles - more residues (which means unnecessary expenses). But an apron made of large-format tiles is easier to keep clean: there are fewer seams and the chance that a fungus will start in them.
Tip: Order a kitchen first. It is necessary to order exactly - in this case you will finally decide on the project and you will not change anything. When you pay for a furniture order and get a project with dimensions in your hands, you will clearly understand which areas will be tiled and what area they will have. And then you can more accurately calculate the consumption of tiles (and afford more expensive collections).
For a corner kitchen, the calculation is this: we find the upper boundary (where the cabinets begin and the apron ends), from it we count down 60 cm and add a margin of 5 - 10 cm.
Tip: Think about the symmetry and beauty of the styling. For example, you can lay out the tile symmetrically with respect to the hood, sink or other central element of the headset.
Ideally, when furniture and tiles come to the door trim (as in the photo in this interior). Ends and crevices are not visible - tiles can be laid only on the apron.
